eBay came into being an on-line auction website by the name of AuctionWeb in 1995, but has since dominated the world to the extent that it has now become part of popular culture (as shown in Transformers: The Movie). It started with the on-line auction website now known as eBay.com but has since then acquired both Skype and Paypal and turned them into what they are now. Paypal acts as one of the bases of on-line investing as most of on-line investing is done using Paypal which is also used commonly for online shopping and sending and receiving money with friends and family. Skype is a program which has also become a household name. It is a must for people whose friends or family are living abroad as it erases all distances with its Video Chat which no other program can match. And eBay is THE place to find any unusual item or anything over which you don't want to spend too much money. After its release in the US, it has since been released in 30 other countries. Paypal is so well integrated into eBay that payment on eBay is seamless if you have Paypal. eBay's web site development is also top-notch as their websites feel more like polished software than an HTML web page. On-Line Investing has taken a new turn with the introduction of PayPal as payments are now hassle-free, one-click affairs. As eBay shocked the on-line auction world, Skype did so with the Communication one. And it is improving at a superb and commendable pace as program updates are very frequent and useful. eBay.com, though is losing it's glamour a little bit due to competitors such as Craigslist. And On-Line Retailers such as Amazon.com and Newegg.com have switched some people over due to their low-prices and hassle-free shopping involving no third-parties (most of the time). The internet would be quite a bit different had eBay not been alive and present. Thus is the story of eBay, how it came to be, what it is and what it means to the world, and where it is heading.
